Caution: Thomas the Tank Engine can be Dangerous to your Health

People taller than 3 feet should probably not play with wooden train sets. At least that's the lesson I learned this summer. Back some time in July, I was playing with Noah and his train set one day (with Kai on my tummy in a baby carrier - maybe that was part of the problem) when my knee landed hard and awkwardly on Thomas. It was painful enough that I had to lie down in order not to pass out, but when the immediate pain was over and I could walk around I decided that no major damage could possibly have been done in such a silly accident. After several weeks of unsuccessful home treatment (and really, who has time to see a doctor with a toddler and infant needing constant attention) I finally went to see a sports medicine doctor who immediately suspected a torn meniscus which an MRI eventually confirmed. The doctor was quite impressed by my abilities - he has practiced for a while and had never quite heard a story like this one. Well, the only option for healing was surgery. With all arrangements in place, the surgery finally took place this week. We are SO grateful to "Gram" for flying up from Richmond, Virginia to help out with the boys, cook meals and a multitude of other sunrise to sunset tasks. It really would have been most impossible without her here! Thank you, thank you! Kai came with us to the surgical center so that I could nurse him right before they wheeled me off. Luckily, he had a huge meal, thus being able to wait to eat again until most of the anesthesia hopefully was on its way out of my system. Although the promise of instant relief appears to have been somewhat false, I hope to be functioning well soon again. Fortunately, I am able to put some weight on my leg and do not need crutches which certainly makes the whole situation much more manageable. And from now on, I will be very careful around Thomas the Tank Engine.
Unfortunately I don't have many pictures of Gram and the boys from this visit but here is at least some evidence that she was here:
