Santa Lucia

Yesterday evening we had our SWEA Christmas Party with Santa Lucia performance. Noah and I have been practicing the songs with the other moms/kids as well as in the car and he has caught on fairly well to a couple of them. This year's event was held at the American Swedish Institute (where I also teach Swedish) which is in a beautiful old mansion in a somewhat run-down neighborhood of Minneapolis. The Friday rush hour traffic was quite bad for Twin Cities standards and it took us almost an hour-and -a- half to get there. Fortunately, both boys are excellent car travellers and did not complain. The Santa Lucia singing was early on in the evening's scheduled events. Noah and Kai were dressed up as little "tomtar" - Noah all in red, Kai in red/white stripes, both with little Santa hats on. They looked cute and of course, I completely forgot to take close-up pictures of them in all the hustle and bustle. Noah was very excited when we started singing and walking towards the performance area. As we all lined up, he caught sight of Phil and excitedly started yelling, "Daddy, Daddy!" and then ran out straight to Phil. He eventually came back and stood next to me for a few songs, then started making some non-singing loud noises, so I whisked him away so as not to disturb the performance, then came back for the last song. Noah did not sing much - he was probably too excited about the audience and the whole atmosphere - but he certainly enjoyed the event, which is pretty much all I hoped for considering he is just 2. Phil and I then gulped down some traditional Swedish Christmas food and drank some glogg before heading home with our over-exhausted boys. Outside, it had started snowing and though it was very pretty, driving home was a bit treacherous, so we were very glad to be home safe and sound in our beds.
