My company sells its employees discounted tickets and throws in a free t-shirt that refers to Boston Scientific. If you and all your family wear your t-shirts on the first Saturday of the fair and you're picked out by the "spotters", you get a gift certificate. Needless to say, there are many Boston Sci t-shirts there today. It's actually kind of cool. I don't see any other ubiquitous company t-shirt assault so Boston Sci is it. Random people ask me and Ebba where we got our shirts because they think they're great. You'll notice the unique color in the pictures; we are very identifiable. We get spotted and receive a gift certificate to PF Changs. Nice!
Another major aspect of the fair is the food. There is a ton of it and about 99% of it is total crap. Simply put, it's a terribly unhealthy, junk food orgy. Seeing this is our third time, we decide to branch out from the normal pronto pup fare and add a new "dish" to our fair food portfolio.
Before starting on our food adventure, however, we check out the Miracle of Life barn. This is where cows, pigs and sheep give birth. Some people get as close as they can and take pictures. Hey, whatever works for you but we decide to give plenty of room just in case. The place is a zoo (get it?) with all the people in tight quarters but Noah enjoys it for as long as a three year old possibly can; we are out of there in about ten minutes.
We then begin our culinary tour.
We start with deep fried cheese curds which are dynamite. If you've never had one (highly likely if you don't live up here) you need to add this tasty morsel to your list of things to eat before you die; they're that good. We even let Kai try one; he loves it.
After our appetizer, we decide to do some rides with Noah before moving on to the main course. So we head over to the rides and have some fun. Okay, Noah has some fun. Noah actually does smile on all the rides.
We do a few other rides but unfortunately, the pictures don't turn out. I guess it is all that crazy high speed action.
Time to move on to the main course. Noah has been talking about only two things he wants to eat. One of them is the Pronto Pups or as Noah calls it the "Pronto Cups" and the other is our last stop of the day (see below). This is also on my list of must eats. A pronto pup, for all those uninitiated, is a deep fried hot dog on a stick...sublime. It's different from a corn dog but the only explanation I've heard is "it's the batter". Noah eats his in about two minutes; his eating speed and alacrity are a sight to behold.
Onward and upward! We next decide we need a vegetable so we walk over to the corn stand. They have these machines that roast the corn in their husks and then a bunch of kids stand around husking hot corn before dipping it in, you guessed it, butter! Yum, yum good. I feel so healthy. After we finish sharing, I recycle the husk. Props to me!
On to the finale, desert. When I told Noah we were going to the State Fair several weeks ago, he asked if we were going to go to the dairy barn and get some ice cream. "Of course", I said emphatically. But before heading over there, Ebba and I have a new "food" to add to our portfolio....are you ready? deep fried snickers.
Our camera battery dies(new camera and neither of us read the directions about charging the new battery) so unfortunately, I don't have any picture of the crime scene. I can report that it looks like a pronto pup with powdered sugar. What? Not enough sugar on the inside? Ebba and I are each good for three bites and then the heart palpitations start. Well, not really but you get the drift. I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed. The monstrosity is really hot so all the chocolate is very runny and this makes it difficult to eat. Ebba adds the astute comment that the breading is a bit too thick; I nod my head in complete agreement. I don't think this will be on the menu next year so we'll be thinking hard about a replacement.
We then make it over to the dairy barn where Noah gets his ice cream with chocolate sauce; we also get an ice cream cone. We give Kai a few bites so as not to make him feel left out. Before savoring the ice cream, however, he gets so mad every time one of us takes a bite. Kind of like this:
I still have a little room left so I run off to find a couple of cheap burgers kind of like those $.99 burgers from McDondald's except they're $1.50 at the State Fair. When I bring back the second one for Ebba she looks at me like "really?" Yes, really. She only takes one bite but Noah is more than willing to help me out. Kai gets a few bites too; I don't want to see mad face again.
It is now almost two (we get there around 10), Noah is fading and the crowds are really starting to build.
Out of the fair, onto the bus back to the car and a lazy rest of afternoon as our bodies try to figure out what just happened. Noah is exhausted from the day and thus, in bed and asleep by 6:45.
Overall, the day is a smashing success. We'll take a few days to let our bodies recover from the damage and then in about 365 more days we'll do it all over again.
