9 Month Check-Up

It's hard to believe that 9 months have passed since that wonderful day in May last year when Kai joined our world! Last week, we paid a visit to our pediatrician for a well-baby check-up. Kai's measurements were:

Height: 29 inches (70th %ile)
Weight: 19.4 pounds (25th %ile) - Noah weighed 19.5 lbs at 4 months! So interesting considering that they started out life at almost the identical weight.
Head: 19 inches (98th %ile)

The doctor did his required poking, prodding and peeking and pronounced Kai to be in good health and a little charmer. It really is so sweet how Kai just likes to reach his hand up and gently pat people on their cheeks - how can you not just melt at that! The doctor did recommend following up on a couple of things. First, Kai has a lazy eye that has become more and more evident over the past month. We will be seeing a pediatric opthalmologist this week to see if anything needs to be done with that. Second of all, we will have a brief evaluation with a physical therapist from the school system to see if Kai needs any exercises to encourage some more movement than we are seeing. Kai sits well by himself and plays with toys while sitting, so has pretty good balance, however, he does not get himself into sitting position - we have to put him there. And although he is perfectly capable of rolling front to back and back to front, he doesn't really do it a whole lot. The doctor said he really isn't very concerned, but since the evaluation is free through the school system (well, tax-supported, so not technically free) we might as well do it and if nothing else, learn how to motivate him a bit to get moving. Of course, in my mind I'm thinking "if there is nothing wrong, why in the world do I want to motivate him to move....once that starts, life will getting even crazier running after both Noah AND Kai!" Interestingly, the doctor also said that the lazy eye and the physical stuff could be related -- if they are, the opthalmologist will be able to shed some light on that.
